Day 6

DEPARTING ROME – DAY 6

Today we said good-bye to Rome. I loved the city! I loved seeing the ancient sights and imagining what the times were like back then. I loved knowing that Paul and Peter had been here in this city some 2000 years ago. I loved the streets, the cafes, the friendly people, and of course, the gelati! My feet did not fare too well, but it was well worth it.
Here are some last pictures of this beautiful, unique city.
This one was taken yesterday and depicts how they incorporate the ancient with the newer. Notice the old wall with the more modern building, the café, and the scooters.

We had breakfast one last time on the rooftop of the beautiful Marriot and then took a stroll down the Via Veneto. Notice that the street signs are only on the buildings, not on the streets themselves.  It makes navigating interesting.

Ciao Mauricio!
We then visited out favorite waiter Mauricio, at the Café Veneto, to say good-bye!

Many of the cafes on Via Veneto have outdoor tables that are enclosed on the sidewalk. Notice the ancient wall in the background.

As we continued our stroll, we came across the stately Swiss Embassy compound.

And then we took a taxi to the port of Civitavecchia. The Italian countryside did not look very different from what I have seen here in America. We saw some cattle, horse, and sheep on the rolling hills. The trees looked similar to the trees around Greenville.  We arrived at the port and boarded the Celebrity Silhouette, along with 2,800 other passengers.  The ship set sail at 5:00 PM and headed for Naples, Italy.  We will dock there at 7:00 AM.

The Mediterranean Sea is beautiful – crystal bluish green. Sorry that we do not have any pictures for you.  It was rather hectic getting on board and then the sky was hazy-so photos were not great.
We are going to bed before midnight (a first on this trip), with plans to start early in the AM on our next exploration.
